Dick Horst, PhD, CPE

President and Principal User Experience Specialist

Dr. Horst is an experimental psychologist and human factors engineer with extensive experience in applied behavioral research, systems development, and usability engineering. He founded UserWorks, as Man-Made Systems Corporation in September, 1989, and since then has been involved in all aspects of the company's technical work, business development, and management.

Bill Saiff

Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Bill came to UserWorks after 11 years at Fannie Mae where he founded and directed the company’s User Research and Interaction Design Group, which was responsible for the user-interface design of over 70 B2B and B2C applications and web sites. Since joining UserWorks, Bill has managed usability research, evaluations, and design on a variety of projects including online tax preparation software for Liberty Tax Service, the Quality Report and Disparities Report web sites and related data analysis tools for the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, DODTechipedia for the U.S. Defense Technical Information Center, the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s, and plain language credit card disclosure print materials.

Weimin Hou, PhD

Senior User Experience Specialist

Weimin started working at UserWorks shortly after receiving her Ph.D. degree in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2008. She has worked on a wide variety of projects, conducting user research and task analysis, developing information architecture (IA), prototyping wireframes, and carrying out usability evaluations. She is well-experienced with various user research techniques, such as usability testing, heuristic evaluation, in-depth interviews, persona development, card sorting, and web analytics data analysis.

Dana Douglas, MS

Senior User Experience and Accessibility Specialist

Dana is a user experience specialist with a wide range of experience in user research, including usability testing, accessibility evaluation, heuristic evaluation, persona development, survey design, and contextual interviews. Her experience with user research has also spanned various types of products, including Web-based applications, print materials, and handheld devices. She has particular interests in communicating through plain language and designing for accessibility.

Mark Becker, MA

Senior User Experience Specialist

Mark is a User Experience Specialist at UserWorks, where he leads projects involving usability evaluations, task analyses, and other user research. He has also played a support role on a wide variety of projects, including accessibility reviews, ergonomic evaluations, mental modeling, and interface design and redesign efforts. Mark also has strong technical skills and has been valuable in maintaining and upgrading UserWorks’ lab equipment and office computer network.

Jake Bevitt, MS

Project User Experience Specialist

Jake’s expertise is in user behavioral research, including experimental design, data collection, and data analysis. Skilled in many user experience evaluation methods, Jake has employed task analysis, card-sorting, persona creation, online surveys, expert reviews, and usability testing on a variety of projects. He is also practiced in design methods that involve HTML coding and various forms of prototyping, such as wireframing and paper prototyping. He holds a master’s degree in human factors and applied cognition from George Mason University (GMU).

Tristan Wilson, MS

Staff User Experience Specialist

Tristan has an extensive background in behavioral and psycho-physiological research, with formal training in a range of methodologies from behavioral coding to electroencephalography (EEG). He is versed in web development, digital design and data analysis. At UserWorks, his work includes usability evaluation, user experience testing, user journey mapping, wireframing, prototyping, and accessibility remediation. Tristan holds a Master of Science degree in clinical psychological science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

James Soldinger, BS

Staff User Experience Specialist

At UserWorks, James works on a variety of projects that involve usability evaluation, user experience testing, design mock-up, participant recruitment, literature review, and accessibility. He has a background in psychology, human behavior, and research. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. in Psychology and Criminology and Criminal Justice. Before coming to UserWorks, he worked at the Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research as a project coordinator and research assistant. James is currently pursuing his M.S. in Interaction Design and Information Architecture from the University of Baltimore.
