If you're a shopper, you're probably familiar with the names of some of the top supermarket chains in the U.K. These include George, Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons. But which are the best? George

While the brand's clothing lines are sold exclusively at Asda, their sales are still relatively low, coming in at 2.9% of the total U.K. market in 1999. This compares to 13% for Britain's No. 1 retailer. Despite their lack of prestige, however, George's sales have increased considerably over the years, with sales of clothes more than doubling to 629 million pounds. Even so, their success could be limited until they are able to move beyond Asda.

The company's success is attributed in part to the fact that the company has been in the food business for over a century. Its founders, including the founders of George, started out small in North Carolina. The company's success was due in large part to George's father, Moses George. After George's father died in 1895, he resigned his position as president and CEO of the company, and enlisted his sons to run it.

Aldi

A German discount chain that launched in the UK in 1990, Aldi is now one of the most popular supermarkets in the UK. The company has grown to over 960 stores across the UK, with many being located in high-traffic areas, with plenty of parking. The company has also recently announced plans to open 100 new stores in the UK by 2023, with plans to expand into the US.

The UK is a high-wage economy, and labour costs make up a large part of supermarket operating costs. This gives discounters a big competitive advantage in the UK grocery market. They typically stock a smaller selection of items, don't do promotions, and employ fewer staff in order to maximize profit per employee. Lidl

Known for its low prices, Lidl has exploded in popularity in recent years. Its low prices and fewer branded products make it an appealing option for the budget conscious shopper. In fact, Lidl is now the seventh largest supermarket chain in Britain, overtaking Waitrose. It has opened 500,000 stores in the last year, and now accounts for 5.9% of the grocery market in the UK.

As grocery prices increase, UK shoppers are flocking to discount stores. In fact, two in three consumers have visited Aldi or Lidl in the last 12 weeks. The two brands have boosted sales across the UK and reached a record high of almost eight percent. That's higher than the fourth-largest supermarket chain, Morrisons, which held a 13.9% share of the market.

Morrisons

Morrisons is one of the morrisons opening times largest supermarket chains in the UK, with a market share of 10.4%. The company was founded in 1899 as an egg and butter stall, and has grown into one of the largest in the country. In 1967, it became a publicly listed company, and in 2004, it bought rival Safeway, which boosted its presence in southern England. In recent years, the company has been owned by a group of institutional investors, including Softbank-owned Fortress Investment Group.

The supermarket chain's future is unclear, however, as it is lagging behind rivals in several key areas. Given the competitive landscape, Morrisons plans to focus on price reductions. The company remains on track to invest PS1bn in price cuts. The move comes as rivals are also pledging to reduce the price of fresh and branded products. Despite this, Higginson sees the need for investing in innovation and service. Market Street will remain a cornerstone of the brand's retail offer.

Argos and ASDA

ASDA, one of the UK's leading supermarket brands, has launched its own lifestyle blog devoted to holistic well-being. Its home page features a call to action asking customers to share their views. While most Netto stores offer the same products as other major supermarkets, some are exclusive to the brand. Netto stores also offer discounts on food items from other retailers.

Kaufland is a German chain of hypermarkets. It was founded in 1984 in Neckarsulm and currently operates over 1200 stores across Europe. This chain specializes in discounted supermarket goods, with weekly specials. Another German supermarket brand, Netto, is a popular choice for budget shoppers. The chain is identifiable by its yellow signage. In addition to Netto, you can find Marken-Discount stores throughout Germany. These chains are Edeka-owned and operate in southern Germany. Other low-cost retail stores include Penny Markt and Norma.
